DURATION: 50 min.

India is known as the global medicine production factory. It has a thriving pharmaceutical industry that produces quality medicine at affordable prices.

These are the so called generics, copies of the original drugs produced by the big pharmaceutical companies of the West. They are equally effective, but are sold at incomparably lower prices than the originals. That is why they are of incalculable value to poor people in India and the, so called, developed world.

In the face of competition, the big pharmaceutical companies fight back holding a powerful weapon in their hands, the patents, attempting to strike India’s generic drug industry and consolidate their monopoly worldwide.

It is a real war of interests, where corporate profits are, more literally than ever, juxtaposed to human lives.

The"© Life Copyright” follows the case of the Swiss company Novartis that sued the Indian state, starting thus a landmark legal battle. A battle so important that could threaten the access of billions of poor people around the world to affordable lifesaving drugs.

PEOPLE AND NUMBERS

DURATION: 48 min.

According to the IMF, Ghana is a case of success! The government, after faithfully following the IMF's recommendations for shrinking the public sector, fully liberalizing the market and carrying out privatizations, has now "achieved its goals". Nowadays, the country's economy is among the world's 20 fastest growing economies and the first in Africa!

However at the same time, 4,000 schools do not have any facilities and the students are having their lessons under the trees. At the clinics in the country's northern parts there is one doctor per 161,000 inhabitants! And small scale farmers, without any support from the state, have been left to starve, struggling alone in the free market's vast sea.

Growth... for whom?

EL SISTEMA - SAVING LIVES

DURATION: 51 min.

One afternoon in 1975, in a garage in Caracas, Venezuela, the then 36-year-old music professor and economist José Antonio Abreu began a crusade that seemed completely utopian. He wanted to save as many children as possible from poverty, the streets and criminality, by teaching them free of charge classical music and making them members of a classical Symphony Orchestra.

“There was nothing like the first rehearsal”, reminisces the 74-year old conductor today. “It is the moment I remember with the greatest passion. The rest was a great everyday thrill.”

Only 11 children came to that first rehearsal. But the seed had already been planted in the ground, giving birth to what would later become globally known as EL SISTEMA (The System). An education system and at the same time a weapon against poverty. A tool for social change. An attempt to change the world through music!

GOLDEN TIMES - CASSANDRA'S TREASURE

DURATION: 57 min.

The exploitation of the country’s mineral wealth is projected as the most reasonable solution to deal with the economic crisis that plagues Greece. The Greek state has ceded its mining rights over 31.700 ha of land in northern Halkidiki, a region rich in gold, copper and other metals, to the Canadian multinational company Eldorado Gold. However, many of the region’s inhabitants, who have been resisting the construction of a goldmine for years, claim that this investment will cause irreparable damage to the environment and the benefits will be fewer than the losses.

“Cassandra’s Treasure” presents a detailed picture of the modern Greek state before and during the crisis period.

GOLDEN TIMES - BLACK VILVA

DURATION: 52 min.

Rosia Montana is a village of 4,000 inhabitants, nestled in a green valley in the Carpathian Mountains of Romania, with a 2000-year-long history. Its underground holds a treasure, namely Europe’s largest gold deposit! There are, on the whole, 240 tons of gold, which the Canadian company Gabriel Resources plans to exploit by constructing Europe’s largest opencast gold mine in the area.

The historically high prices of this precious metal make this investment particularly profitable for the company. On the other side, the Romanian state believes that, during this period of global economic crisis, this project will bring development, workplaces and immediate profits of 4 billion dollars.

Despite all this, there are some determined inhabitants, who have been resisting for years, and who believe that Rosia Montana’s true treasure is not its gold. If the realization of the mine requires the residents’ relocation, the environment’s pollution and the destruction of Rosia Montana’s ancient cultural inheritance, who is the one to decide if all this is worth the sacrifice?

DAYS OF RAGE

DURATION: 63 min.

What was the Libyan uprising? A popular revolution that put an end to a tyrannical regime in the most absolute way? Or a well organised international intervention against a leader, who had become annoying? “Days of Rage” narrates minute-by-minute what transpired from the revolution’s beginning to its very end at the battlefields, as well as on a diplomatic level. It investigates into the causes of this revolution and NATO’s intervention, while at the same time tries to shed light on the present and future of a country, which for 42 years was synonymous with Muammar Gaddafi.
